Some partnerships grow slowly, one relationship at a time.

We’ve been working with Intermix since 2023, when they began distributing Wildflyer coffee throughout the Twin Cities office hospitality scene. But our relationship goes back even further—to when their sales manager and our personal favorite Welshman, Barnaby, volunteered to lead our Bar 101 classes. We sat down with the Intermix team to talk about why they’ve continued investing in Wildflyer, what they’ve learned from our graduates, and why they chose to become an Employment Partner.

Our values and mission are tangible feelings in the shop. You can feel what we do, support our work, and get a treat all at the same time. And it’s why we’ve stuck around; our model of support is transparent, honest, and, frankly, innovative. As someone said to us recently, “It’s a shame a place like Wildflyer has to exist, but we’re so glad you do.” Our services are needed - now more than ever. As the cost of living continues to go up, the number of young people experiencing housing instability always rises too.

Two young people. Two continents. One supply chain.

In the southern hills of India, I reach up and pick a round, red coffee cherry from its branch.

Sweat rolls down my back. My feet sink into the damp earth as I stand and stretch, feeling the pull in my lower spine. This kind of labor is so different from my normal desk job—sending emails, sitting in meetings, reviewing budgets. I like the weight in my muscles. I like the clarity that comes from working with my hands.

Belonging is a Verb.

The shop in St. Paul is bright and cheery - despite the wintry mix settling down outside. People are seated with their laptops, with friends, everyone drinking something warm and comforting.

Z and I sit down together. I’ve already told them I think they’re really cool - we share a love for Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire and Queer horror, among other things. They’ve been an outstanding member of our cohort, even recently elected to Wildflyer’s first Youth Advisement Board.They start by telling me, “I don’t think I’ve missed a single shift. Except for that one time I was sick.” Which is a feat to say the least.
